This gives an idea of some of the fetishes in our collection. The Black Marble Frog with the band of inlaid turqouise on the top shelf is a replica of a frog that was found at the ancient ruins of Chaco Canyon, NM.
This photo shows a variety of animals. The taller red fetish in the middle of the top shelf is a "Six Directions" carving, with the various directions carved on different faces of the piece. Also, of note, is our "flying pig" in the right bottom corner.
This photo has a bobcat, longhorn steer (popular with our Texas clientele), donkey, wolf, 2 bison, & 2 bats (yes, they are the only winged mammals). The bat in the center is carved from antler.
This photo shows a bear & bison on pieces of labradorite & a squirrel on a piece of copper.
La Tierra Mineral Gallery specializes in unique Zuni fetishes. A fetish is an object believed to have a power greater than the object itself would naturally possess. A fetish that has been ceremonially blessed by a shaman would be considered a "true" fetish by most Native Americans. Fetishes are used to bring the power of the animal to you. For example, frog is for bringing rain, Corn Maidens for abundant crops, & bear for strength & protection.
